Reaffirming its commitment to enhancing global cooperation in the fight against terrorism and violent extremism, Qatar

United Arab Emirates, ABU DHABI, June 28, 2023 — The State of Qatar reiterated its unwavering dedication to fostering international cooperation in order to prevent and combat terrorism and violent extremism through an all-encompassing strategy, highlighting the need for the international response to be comprehensive, cooperative, informed, and to adopt best practices, with the UN serving as the primary coordinator.
This information was included in a statement from the State of Qatar that was given by HE Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani, Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the UN, at a side event for the UN Joint Appeal for Counter-Terrorism in Africa that was held in conjunction with the Third Counter-Terrorism Week (CT Week) in New York.
Her Excellency reaffirmed the position taken by the State of Qatar that the spread of terrorism poses a serious danger to world peace and security, especially in Africa. The 10 UN inter-agency flagship initiatives supported by the Joint Appeal, she continued, are a promise that must be kept as well as a new generation of multilateral action and joint programming that depends on the strengths of each partner to provide comprehensive and creative solutions to pressing priority challenges across the continent.
The Joint Appeal for Counter-Terrorism in Africa, which complements the aims and spirit of the ninth biannual assessment of the United Nations Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy and places a strong emphasis on preventative measures, is current and relevant, according to HE the Permanent Representative.
According to Her Excellency, the UN needs enough and dependable finance in order to carry out its duties and effectively assist member states in putting the global plan into action. She stated that through a multi-year strategic investment of USD 120 million in the United Nations Trust Fund for Counter-Terrorism for the eight-year period of (2019-2026), the State of Qatar has vowed to support strategic and multi-partner initiatives for the prevention and combating of violent extremism.
In this regard, HE Sheikha Alya expressed her joy at the selection of several important international counter-terrorism initiatives funded by the State of Qatar via the Joint Appeal of the United Nations Trust Fund for Counter-Terrorism.
She thanked the UN Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT), the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the Kingdom of Morocco, and the Republic of Tunisia for coordinating the Joint Appeal for Counter-Terrorism in Africa’s launch.
He also expressed the pride of the State of Qatar in hosting the first Annual Forum of Beneficiaries of Technical Assistance in Doha in March 2022 and expressed excitement for the upcoming second Annual Forum of Beneficiaries of Technical Assistance, which will be held in Rabat in November and will be centered on Africa.
HE Sheikha Alya praised the participants in the Joint Appeal for their commitment, perseverance, and spirit of cooperation. She expressed interest in learning more about the Joint Appeal’s transformational outcomes in the future.
