Hundreds of individuals assaulted the Swedish consulate in Iraq, climbing the walls and torching the structure.
They were opposing Sweden’s second scheduled Quran burning in less than a month.
The ambassador of Sweden has been told to leave Iraq as well.
Swedish authorities denounced the assault and reaffirmed that everyone working at the embassy in Baghdad was secure.
Earlier this year, the authorities in Sweden turned down many requests for rallies that included burning the Quran.
However, invoking free speech protections, the nation’s courts decided that the demonstrations should be allowed to proceed.
