Residents of the Chavid hamlet in Afghanistan’s northeastern Badakhshan region banded together and dug deep into their own wallets to construct their own school after becoming weary of their children not attending a quality school.

Residents of the hamlet in the Shighnan area said that since neither the government nor non-governmental groups had stepped forward to assist, their children have been attending school under tents up to this point.

Teacher Mohammad Jan Ariayee stated, “Our pupils learn beneath the tents under the sweltering heat and they suffer many issues. Nine classrooms will be constructed by locals for the pupils. There will be room for 250 pupils, and the school will provide instruction for grades 1 through 9.

Other issues facing the education sector in Badakhshan include a lack of school buildings, a teacher shortage, and a lack of textbooks and educational supplies.

“We are doing unpaid volunteer service at no charge. We want to protect our kids from these problems and the sun, said construction worker Nazar Mohammad. Shighnan district, which is 150 kilometers from Faizabad, the province seat, is a rural region that previously lacked infrastructure, including schools.

There will be 250 pupils in the new facility, ranging in age from one to nine.
