Saudi Arabia said Wednesday the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran was a “blatant violation” of Iran’s sovereignty and international law, according to a statement released by the Saudi foreign ministry.

Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Walid al-Khuraiji, who represented the Kingdom at a meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Jeddah on Wednesday, underscored the severity of this breach, saying the assassination is seen as a direct threat to regional stability and peace.

In his address, al-Khuraiji also criticized Israel for escalating violence against Palestinian civilians. He highlighted the disregard for international agreements and resolutions by the Israeli occupation, which has exacerbated the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the West Bank.

Al-Khuraiji emphasized the dire situation faced by Palestinians, including severe shortages of food, medicine, and fuel, as well as the overwhelming strain on the health sector. He reiterated Saudi Arabia’s condemnation of the Israeli attacks on civilians and its call for the international community to hold the Israeli forces accountable for their actions.

The deputy minister reaffirmed the Kingdom’s support for a comprehensive resolution to the Palestinian issue, advocating for an end to the occupation and a viable solution that enables the establishment of an independent Palestinian state in line with international legitimacy and the Arab Peace Initiative
