The production and harvest of opium poppies are well known in Afghanistan. According to a United Nations study from the previous year, the country’s opium harvest in 2022 was the most lucrative in recent memory, with cultivation increasing by over a third.

The fact that the data was the first since the Taliban took back control in August 2021 added to its significance. In April 2022, tough new rules enacted by the extreme Islamist government outlawed the growth of all opium poppies as well as all other drugs.

However, the world didn’t take the prohibition seriously when it was first announced because of worries about the country’s severe economic situation and the pressing need for resources, with the opium trade serving as a source of income.

Contrary to how they impose abrupt and severe laws when it comes to women and their rights, the current trend demonstrates how the Taliban used a rather moderate strategy to address the drug issue in the nation.
