Hamas has proposed to release all of the remaining Israeli captives, including male soldiers who were held on 7 October 2023, in exchange for an end to the war on Gaza, Al Jazeera reported today.

This would bring an end to the weekly captive exchanges, with a number of Israelis being handed over to the Red Cross in exchange for several hundred Palestinian detainees being released from Israel’s jails.

There’s been no official Israeli response to this, Al Jazeera added, noting that within right-wing Israeli parties such a deal would not be popular as both Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and former National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir have repeatedly called for a return to bombing Gaza and the displacement of its population to make way for Jewish settlement. The ministers have also threatened to quit the coalition government if a complete truce is agreed, collapsing the ruling coalition.
