State television said on Sunday that the Iranian foreign ministry has summoned the charges d’affaires in Tehran from Sweden and Denmark to protest the burning and destroying of copies of the Koran in those countries.

Several copies of the Muslim holy book have been burnt or vandalized by anti-Islam extremists in Denmark and Sweden in recent months, provoking anger in the Muslim world and calls for the Nordic governments to outlaw such crimes.

Both nations’ governments have issued statements denouncing the arsons and said they are exploring new legislation to curb similar attacks.

According to state media, the chief of the human rights department of the Iranian Foreign Ministry said, “Iran lays the full responsibility and the serious repercussions of the Holy Koran’s desecration on the Swedish and Danish governments.”
