With the money, the WFP will be able to provide over 70,000 food insecure individuals in regions with severe food insecurity life-saving food assistance, the agency stated in a statement.

According to Wand Yu, the Chinese ambassador to Afghanistan, “Since 2022, the Chinese government and people have donated large amounts of humanitarian supplies to Afghanistan to help the people overcome difficulties.”

Additionally, the Chinese ambassador said that China has continued to work with the World Food Programme this year to provide the Afghan people with food aid via the Global Development and South-South Cooperation Fund.

Nearly 15 million people in Afghanistan are suffering from levels of food insecurity that are considered crisis and emergency.

The Chinese Government’s timely donation comes at a time when continuing assistance is most required, according to Hsiao-Wei Lee, WFP Afghanistan Country Director and Representative. “This year, WFP in Afghanistan is facing an acute funding crisis,” she said. According to estimates, over 15 million people in the nation are suffering from severe food insecurity. To prevent the already alarming rates of hunger and malnutrition from rising further, persistent humanitarian aid is required.

Due to a shortage of financing, WFP was already compelled to limit the quantity of monthly rations for all households and the number of recipients by 8 million.

With this most recent donation, the World Food Programme (WFP) intends to purchase 15 tons of salt, 185 tons of yellow split peas, over 1,500 metric tons of wheat flour, and more than 130 tons of vegetable oil. This will enable WFP to provide two months of assistance to almost 70,000 people.

In Afghanistan in 2022, the WFP provided 23 million people with cash transfers totaling $325.8 million and 1.14 million tons of food. 11.6 million of the 23 million persons helped were women, and 12.3 million were children.
